Family of Indian woman found dead in US suspects dowry death

Hyderabad, Nov 22 (IANS) The family of a 24-year-old woman from Andhra Pradesh, who was found dead in her house near Los Angeles in the US, suspects that her death was connected to her husband's demand for more dowry.

Goli Sushma was found dead in the store-room of her house at Northridge city near Los Angeles. She had married Goli Suresh Babu, a software engineer, in April 2006 and had been staying in the US for the past one year.

According to Sushma's father V. Kanakarajam, he received the news of his daughter's death Friday from Harika, a relative in Los Angeles.

Babu had rung up Harika and asked her to visit his the house saying he had some problem. By the time Harika reached there, Sushma's body had been shifted to a hospital for autopsy, Kanakarajam said.

The grief stricken father said that he made several attempts to contact his son-in-law ...

As Obama's cabinet takes shape, Clinton saga continues

Washington, Nov 22 (IANS) US President-elect Barack Obama is reported to be closing in on his picks for key posts to deal with America's worst financial crisis in decades and shore up its image abroad - an area where New York Senator Hillary Clinton may play a major role if she agrees to become secretary of state.

The New York Times reported Friday that Clinton would give up her Senate seat and accept the position of America's top diploamt. It cited two confidants who said the decision was made after further consultation with Obama about the nature of her role and his foreign policy plans.

But the Clinton camp shot down media reports that claimed the former first lady had already agreed to accept the secretary of state position.

"We're still in discussions, which are very much on track," said Philippe Reines, Clinton's senior adviser. "Any reports beyond that are premature."

1,300 independents join poll fray in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal, Nov 22 (IANS) Though independent legislators hardly influence Madhya Pradesh politics, more than 1,300 independent candidates have entered the fray in the expectation of a fractured mandate in the Nov 27 assembly elections.

With independents and ambitious regional players like Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Uma Bharati's Bharatiya Jan Shakti (BJS) Party joining the poll battle, the state is agog with speculations of a hung assembly.

Though the two chief rival parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, deny any such possibility, political pundits say there is a possibility that no single party would hit the magic figure of 116 in the 230-member assembly.

"With many players this time, there are strong chances that no party gets a simple majority to form the government on its own; in which case the independents will play the king-makers," says political analyst Girija Shanker in Bhopal.

London Assembly votes for Twenty20 cricket in 2012 Olympics

London, Nov 22 (IANS) The London Assembly has called for Twenty20 cricket to be included as a showcase sport in the 2012 Olympic Games.

Members agreed a motion urging the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to work with the International Cricket Council (ICC) and International Olympic Committee (IOC) so that the sport is included.

Assembly member Murad Qureshi, who proposed the motion, said: "Cricket is our traditional summer game and I can't think of a better way of spending an afternoon - whether it's playing or watching.

"Twenty20 cricket is a shorter, more accessible version of the game that is played throughout London. We already have the best venues and a very good cricket administration, so there is no need to build new facilities. We are looking forward to next year's Twenty20 World Cup, which will be hosted in the capital and hope that the game will become ...

Jumbos will campaign no more

New Delhi, Nov 22 (IANS) Gulabkali and Bhola, two amiable jumbos, were among the most sought after at one time, especially during elections. Not this time though, as their mahouts feel lumbering down dusty roads for hours is too strenuous for them.

"The animal is after all a living being - it cannot be made to walk the streets for hours on end. Two hours is okay, but the campaigning takes over five hours and we cannot let anyone treat our animals like that," said mahout Yusuf Ali, 34.

He is among those who own the 15 elephants that have been living for years in the Yamuna riverbed below the busy ITO bridge. Once upon a time, they were a common sight on Delhi's streets, lending their lumbering grace to wedding processions and poll campaigns carrying ad hoardings draped on their broad backs and giving joyrides.

All that's becoming rare now. Wildlife protection laws ...

Former Booker judge dislikes Indian novels

London, Nov 22 (IANS) A former Booker Prize judge has confessed to a "narrow-minded" prejudice against English-language novels written by Indians, saying they are full of "all things I don't want in a novel."

In an article published in a British newspaper, David Baddiel also said the fact that Indian novels are "so beloved" of Booker judges may be one reason that keeps him from reading them.

"I don't know why I've read so little Indian literature. I think, undoubtedly, it demonstrates a prejudice."

"Not a racial one, hopefully, but a literary one: a prejudice that Indian novels are likely to be magical, mythic, sweepingly historical, quirky of humour, and spring from the tradition of folk tale; all things I don't want in a novel," Baddiel, who was a 2002 Booker judge, wrote in The Times Friday.

Baddiel, who is in India filming a documentary, admitted that although he owned such literary ...
